The Good Wife

In rural Taiwan, being called a “good wife” seems to be the highest compliment a woman can receive. Whether or not a woman can be called a good wife depends on how well she can serve her husband and family. They take on not only household chores for the family but also farm work to sup- plement the family income, but their work is often neglected by others. Family is the most important thing in Taiwan’s rural culture, and the family culture dominates the lives of the women here, especially for older women. This work documents the figures of these rural women under the influence of the family culture.
